It was once believed that the most common form of workplace injury involved falling from great heights or blunt force trauma. Surprisingly, however, it isn’t necessary to work in a warehouse with heavy pallet racking, in a manufacturing facility, or at a construction site in order to get hurt. Currently, the most common workplace injuries are sustained by those who spend multiple hours each day craned over their computers. You should limit the amount of time that you spend sitting without breaks or significant alignment changes. Get up and stretch at least once an hour. Take a walk to the water cooler or break area and stretch your back and legs. Sittings still for too long puts extraordinary stress on the tailbone and spine and can lead to discomfort and other postural issues.

When you sit too long over a computer monitor, you run the risk of straining your neck and cervical spine. If you have been suffering from mild but recurring headaches, this may be the result of a misalignment issue near the top of the neck. To prevent this from happening, be sure to use good posture and to verify that your monitor is positioned to minimize the amount of work that your neck must do.

A lot of companies are taking proactive steps by ensuring that all employees are given ergonomic equipment. It is generally cheaper for businesses to pay the higher costs for these safe office furnishings and tools, than it is to contend with countless worker’s compensation claims. In the past, many employees had to have documented medical issues result from improper equipment, before significant investments in ergonomic products were made.

Not only should you have ergonomic equipment in the work area, but you also want to make sure that you are using it properly. Read the user manuals for different products and verify that the correct settings are in place. Using poorly adjusted products with an ergonomic focus can be just as detrimental as not using them at all.

Some workers are choosing to spend some or all of their time working at standing desks. These are desks that do not require chairs given that they meet team members near chest level. This brings monitors up close to the eyes as well, so that there is never any need to strain. Adjustable desks can be positioned to accommodate both standing and sitting. Toggling between these two positions throughout the day can sometimes be beneficial as well.

If your eyes bother you at the end of the work day, make sure that your monitor has a proper screen coating or shade. Staring at the bright glow of a screen can take a toll on your eyes over time. Having your screen settings adjusted as well so that the risks of eye damage are further minimized.

Speak with your HR department as soon as you start to feel discomfort resulting from your work equipment or job duties. You may find that there is a safer and far more efficient way to get your work done. Proactively protecting your health is important. Even with protections in place to guard injured workers, it is always best to simply maintain good health.
