This allows them to learn and utilize the proper techniques to avoid injury.
Of course, warehouses are not the only place where bad lifting technique could lead to an accident or injury. There are dozens of places where accidents can happen. Some of the most common are hospitals, labs, building and construction sites, sanitation workers, agricultural employees and more. Even office employees who spend most of their day sitting at a desk risk injury when carrying or moving boxes of supplies, files, and other office staples. Delivery workers are another sector who risk hurting themselves every day, since some of their parcels can be quite heavy.
The incorrect handling of packages can cause what is referred to as an MSD, or musculoskeletal disorder. More than 30 percent of all workplace injuries are MSDs. Most of them are related to manual handling, which is why it is imperative to learn how to avoid these injuries.
When getting proper manual handling training, employees will learn how to use any equipment properly, if applicable. This is especially important for warehouse workers, where equipment is large and heavy and could potentially cause injury or even death.
This training should take place before the workers begin their job. In some cases, such as heavy machinery operators, they may also need to practice and get licensed to use the machines. They may also need additional training or a refresher course later. Even though this is a big expense, and injury on the job could be far more costly, so it is best to invest in refresher courses.
The avoidance of injuries is not just up to the employees. If you are an employer or foreman that means that you have a responsibility to ensure that the workers can implement what they learned in their training. That means that you must provide a safe work environment for them. The best way to do this is to assess the risk that you are asking employees to take. You must then decide if any of the hazards can be avoided, and eliminate them if possible. If elimination is not possible, then reduce the risk of injury as much as you can. The employee’s health and safety should be paramount over profits.
Management should also ensure that workers feel safe coming to them with a potential risk in the workplace. If they don’t feel safe, then they are likely not to report hazards, which means that someone is likely to eventually get hurt. There needs to be trust between managers and employees, so they do not feel that their job is at risk if they lodge a complaint.
To keep the workplace absolutely safe, all employees, whether management or laborers, should come to work well-rested and alert. If you someone is distracted, tired or injured, that can lead to accidents that even the best training cannot teach you to avoid.
